University Area Joint Authority Aeration and UV Control Upgrades

The client’s outdated aeration system controls and UV system had a history of malfunctions and failure. Poor control strategies and lack of equipment understanding had created a situation where neither the University Area Joint Authority staff nor an outside contractor could control the system. The aeration system, helping to treat wastewater, is one of the largest energy consumers in the Authority’s wastewater treatment plant, and the UV system provides disinfection of the water. Both are critical in achieving regulatory compliance and desperately needed upgrades.

The Authority hired RETTEW to manage the contractor and correct any design deficiencies in control upgrades for the aeration system. We eliminated blower surging and reduced equipment failures from an average of 30 times per week to 0. For the UV system, our team provided a conceptual plan and integrated several separate systems for streamlined controls. We identified needs and provided a cost-effective solution, while incorporating state-of-the-art equipment. RETTEW’s deep knowledge of the treatment system and our local relationships enabled the project to move to completion and improved dealings between the contractor and the Authority.
